Why railway?

Every day, about 120 000 people travel by train all around the country. Each day, about 200 000 tons of goods are delivered to the economic agents by railway. These realities make the Romanian railways the 4th railway network in Europe as for the volume of traffic.
Why do all these people prefer to travel by train than by their own cars or by other means of transport? Why all these economic agents prefer the railway services when they could use many other transport services. Why do they choose the Railway?
Because they have realized that railway transport is cheaper.

Thus the railroad transport implies a lower consumption of deficiency resources like the electrical energy or used ground areas.
On railway network, the consumption of the energy is 6 times lower than for automotive transport and 3 times lower than for commercial planes. As for the utilization of the area, according to the results of the researches, it results that the area for 500 km high speed network (TGV) is the same as total area for an airport and a double track covers 60% of the area necessary for a double road.

This lower consumption of the deficiency resources determines lower prices for the passenger and freight transport than for the automotive and air transport.
Because they know that the safety indicators of CFR are considerably higher than of many other European railway administrations.
For the Romanian railway operators the security of the passengers and the integrity of goods represent the most important concern, sometimes even more important than the promptness of delivery or than other parameters of quality evaluation of transport services. Compared with the means of the automotive transport, railroad transport was proved to be more reliable. For instance, between 1990-1994, on the railway it was recorded a volume of transport with 195 bigger than by means of automotive transport, without any mortal accident. In the same period, but with a limited volume of transport, for the automotive transport there were 344 events.

Beside of this, because of the systems and modalities of packaging, operation, transport and storage, the qualitative and quantitative integrity of goods can be guaranteed on the entirely circuit of railway transport. For these reasons, one of the main objectives of our company is the maintenance of a high level of safety of our transport services.

Because they know that CNCF "CFR"-SA always thinks about people
Because of the lower consumption of deficiency resources, the railway system offers the most accessible tariffs for the most of the population.
Furthermore, there are different possibilities of discount for many categories of people (students, militaries, etc), and also for different forms of transport (groups, tourist tours, etc).
Consequently, railway represents the main mean of transport for the most of population in Romania. Hence, it can be considered that Romanian railway transport has a positive social impact.

Because they are aware and they care about the environment
The concern for the environment protection and the fight against the pollution represent today major preoccupations at European level. From this point of view, Romanian railway transport has achieved the European standards.

The level of pollution for the transport of 1 ton goods is 10 times lower than the volume of pollution in atmosphere derived from the other means of transport.
Because they are confident of the promptness of the goods' delivery to the destination
In the last years, major investments were realized for the improving of the railway infrastructure. Thus, the speed of goods' transport on the railway network is higher or at least the same as "door-to-door" delivery system offered by automotive transport. The effect of the transport system "over-night" determined decreasing the delivery time of goods. In this way, the period of time that is not utilized by the other transport services can be used in railroad system.

These are just a few reasons for what people choose railway.
